Clint Parker is an undergraduate student in Chinese and Linguistics. Parker recently began work on a project translating a descriptive summary of a minority dialect called Sarikoli. The descriptive summary is in Chinese, and Parker is translating it into English.

Pauline Stratman is vice president of the Chemistry department's Graduate Student Association. One of the tasks associated with her position, and a personal passion for her, is doing outreach to the Lexington community. A special time for the Chemistry department to educate the community is during National Chemistry Week.

Each semester, the College of Arts and Sciences honors its students which have made the Dean’s List. This semester, we talked with some of the honored students about their experiences at UK and how UK and a liberal arts education have helped them in their career goals. Their varying majors, academic experiences, and plans for after college showcased the diversity of opportunities within the College of Arts and Sciences.

On October 5th, 2011, a group of students from the University of Kentucky joined a small march to the site of Occupy Lexington, a sister event to New York's ongoing Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. Students talk about their reasons for attending the event.

Abby Kerins was a poster presenter at the Lexington Farmer's Market on September 17th, 2011. Inspired by Alessandro Portelli, author of They Say in Harlan County, Kerins' research involved listening to (and reading transcripts of) oral histories from the coal-rich region of Appalachian Kentucky. Kerins focused on the role of women during coal miners' strikes in the 20th century.

Kelly Schumm is an Economics and Finance senior who recently traveled to Shanghai to study Mandarin. Kelly briefly discusses her expriences learning Chinese with UK Professor Matt Wells.

Enku Ide is a graduate student in the Department of Sociology and a recipient of a National Science Foundation grant. Ide examines first-generation college and university students' experience, exploring issues of class identity and unionization in graduate student populations. 

Catherine Brereton's recent research was featured in a poster session at the Lexington Farmer's Market in mid-September 2011. Her work focuses on representations of lesbians, mothers, and lesbians as mothers in literature. The poster session was presented by the Chellgren Center, the Office of Undergraduate Research, and the Society for the Promotion of Undergraduate Research. Brereton was mentored by professor Susan Bordo. 

Laura Garrison was one of a group of students that went to Shanghai University with professor Matt Wells over the summer. She told us about the skill of her Chinese language teacher during the immersion-style classes, and the adventures she had during her free time in China.
