NeuroCATS has a new tool to teach students throughout the Commonwealth and beyond about the nervous system  — SynapseKentucky.  

The series of videos is broken down by grade range: elementary school, middle school and high school. They’re designed to augment science curricula as well as the outreach offered by NeuroCATS, a University of Kentucky student organization that visits schools with lessons on neuroscience. The videos feature students explaining key aspects of neuroscience, Titles include “Introduciton to the Spinal Cord” and “Conceptual Check: The Central Nervous System.”

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 25, 2024) — The University of Kentucky chapter of Phi Beta Kappa recently inducted 22 members into the academic honor society. This year’s induction ceremony was  Wednesday, April 17, at the Lewis Honors College Scholars Lounge and featured a keynote address from John Thelin, professor emeritus in the College of Education.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 25, 2024) — Appalachia, often viewed through a lens of disability, will serve as the backdrop for a special event this fall.

Tthe Symposium on Dis/Ability & Debility in Appalachia, scheduled for Sept. 28 at the University of Kentucky, will unite experts from Appalachian studies and disability studies. The symposium aims to foster collaborative conversations and solutions for disabled Appalachians. 

Mack Thompson, a UK master’s student studying applied anthropology, is coordinating the symposium.

"As someone doing disability justice work in Kentucky, I have done disability studies and Appalachian studies research, and seen how clearly related but separate these two fields are,” Thompson said

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 18, 2024) — More than 450 UK undergraduates will converge for the 18th annual Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars. The showcase allows undergraduates to share their discoveries, ideas and creative works with the campus community and public.

The showcase is from 1 to 5 p.m./ Wednesday, April 24,  in the Gatton Student Center Grand Ballroom It features 450 students and 373 presentations representing 94 disciplines and 17 colleges.

Each spring, the showcase unites undergraduates from all disciplines, their faculty mentors and members of the community. At UK, undergraduate research is central to creating a well-rounded student experience.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 17, 2024) —  Sue Roberts, University of Kentucky associate provost for internationalization and member of the Department of Geography in the College of Arts and Sciences, recently was selected to participate in the 2024 Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Program to India.

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers more than 400 awards for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects around the world. 

Roberts also was a Fulbright Scholar for the 2012-13 academic year at the University of Turku in Finland and a Fulbright Specialist in 2016 at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa.

The Committee on Social Theory (CST) is pleased to announce that we are once again accepting applications for Graduate Student Research Grants. 

CST supports research by University of Kentucky graduate students with interests in social theory, broadly defined. Grants between $500-$1,500 will be awarded. Funds can be used for any research-related expenses.

The grant competition is open to graduate students from across the University of Kentucky. Priority will be given to students working towards a ST certificate and/ or have taken the ST 600 or ST 500 course (or an equivalent) within the past two years. Support is available for master’s thesis research and doctoral dissertation research. Award is given up front (not reimbursement). Grantees are required to present their research at a ST graduate student showcase in Fall 2024.
